Maus as Fable

Why does the experience of the Holocaust lend itself to this type of fable storytelling. Or, more simply, how could the Holocaust itself be seen as a sort of beast fable?:

I'm sorry, the Holocaust was a real event..... a horrific slaughter of millions of people. In my opinion, it can never be written off as a fable of any kind.
