Vladek isn't nice to Mala, he is in fact emotionally abusive to her. Mala knows that reasoning with Vladek is futile, “You should know it’s impossible to argue with your father.”

Really the quotes of Anja are through memories. He cared very much for her and was nice to her. I'll try to find a quote if I can.
