Why does Anja's nephew Luke refuse to go the hidden bunker?

Lolek refuses stating that he is tired of hiding. Soon after, he is soon transported to Auschwitz. He survives the camps and eventually becomes a college professor. So yes, I guess he made the right decision. He was a survivor.
