why does vladek make a big deal over the amount of matches that he has when artie used them

Vladek is so conditioned from the war to hoard everything. During the war there was little of anything so people hoarded whatever they could.Vladek collects his matches out of old conditioning that never went away in peace time. It is pretty hard to escape those memories.
