Merchant of Venice
from the merchant of venice study where you felt the ending was disappointing
the ending must be firmly placed in the context of the whole play, plot of play must be outlined

I thought the ending was sad but brilliant. Shakespeare walks a fine line between pathos, sorrow, revenge and brutality. Shylock, in his lust for revenge, loses everything including his daughter and his faith. It's difficult not to feel for the old man. He did get what he wanted but only within a context that was both cruel and brutal.
Sorry, I'd change nothing about it................. the ending was superb!
