The caskets are significant because they allow Portia's father to oversee his daughter's engagement and eventual marriage even after he dies. By requiring each of his daughter's suitors to play the casket game, her father can access their priorities from the grave. Adept as a judge of character, he understands what traits he desires and doesn't want in her daughter's husband.
