I believe plan B is that she will haveto follow her father's will or die an old virgin.

Of course he first way was the three caskets which test each suitor.

Portia's father's will states that the man who wins Portia's hand in marriage must correctly choose one of three caskets (what we might call jewelry boxes). One is gold, one is silver, and the third is made of lead. (Later we learn that it is the leaden casket which contains Portia's picture, entitling the man who chooses that one to take Portia's hand in marriage.)

In Act 3/ Scene 2......Bassanio comes to make his choice of caskets.

Portia, deeply enamored of him, breathlessly awaits the outcome. As Bassanio considers, a song is sung which gives him a hint. The song says that "fancy" (infatuation, not true love) is engendered in the eyes. From this, Bassanio draws the inference that "outward shows be least themselves," and so chooses the casket of lead, the one with the least outward show. The leaden casket contains Portia's picture and a message that "You that choose not by the view, / Chance as fair and choose as true!" Both Bassanio and Portia are overjoyed, and Portia gives Bassanio a ring which Bassanio promises to always wear. Then Nerissa and Gratiano announce that the two of them have fallen in love and are also engaged, increasing the general joy.

In the Elizabethan era, women were supposed to be inferior to the men. They were supposed to obey the male relatives at their home, their fathers and husbands. Even the law was with men. If the women disobeyed or protested, the men had the legal right to beat them. Until 1891, in Britain, men had the legal right to keep the women under lock and key. At such a time, women were supposed to marry and not to remain single. It is because of the fact that the people saw the single women with suspicious eyes. The single women were related to "witches" and were burnt alive as men could not tolerate the freedom of women. Therefore, at such a time, the women had no other choice but to marry a man of her parents' choice. And so Portia has no other way but to follow her father's will. However, she manages to give hints to Bassanio about which casket to choose and thereby, achieving her end.
