Hey, sorry I missed this one.

Why,

thou- loss upon loss! The thief gone with so much, and so much to

find the thief; and no satisfaction, no revenge; nor no ill luck

stirring but what lights o' my shoulders; no sighs but o' my

breathing; no tears but o' my shedding! (3.1.8)

Jessica, his daughter, has eloped with his fortune to marry a Christian. Shylock has lost all sense of justice in his world. Revenge is all he has to cling to. His only balm to numb his pain is taking revenge on Antonio.

This is probably my favourite quote in the play. Here is an abridged excerpt,

I am a Jew. Hath

not a Jew eyes? hath not a Jew hands, organs,

dimensions, senses, affections, passions? ....

If you prick us, do we not bleed?

if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you poison

us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not

revenge? (Act 3 sc.1)

Shylock is trying to say that a Jew has the same body, feelings and passions as Christian men. At the end Shylock adds that, like any man, if he is pushed too far he will seek revenge.
