Miss. Brill has a preoccupation with observing couples. Perhaps she yearns to be loved but for her own reasons would rather watch rather than participate suggesting low self-esteem. We get the sense that Miss. Brill is emotionally ill-equipped to have a relationship with a man. She is set in her ways and would rather judge from a distance than become emotionally invested in her own relationship.
