In the book Miss Alma Peregrine's Bizarre Children's House, Jacob Portman is initially seen as a young child. Jacob talks about how his grandfather showed him pictures of strange children, and Jacob grows up believing that those stories are wrong and are the imagination of his grandfather. One day Jacob received a distress signal from his grandfather and hurriedly found him, but found him killed by a mysterious beast. In the dying words of his grandfather, he told him what he thought was a riddle, but it was actually a simple guide. A "riddle" involves passing an old man's grave and entering a time warp, which Jacob considers to be his grandfather's ramblings. Jacob then glances at the creature that killed his grandfather but realizes that others couldn't see it. dr Jacob's psychiatrist, Golan, proposes a visit to Wales. Jacob was taken to Wales by his father, where he found an old suitcase full of pictures of strange children. In one of the adventures, Jacob visits his grandfather's old orphanage. There, he meets emma Bloom, his grandfather's old love, and a weirdo with the ability to manipulate fire. Jacob then came across a bar where people accused him of being a Nazi, and at this point, Jacob was in a loop that his grandfather spoke to him. An invisible boy named Emma and Millard Nullings rescues Jacob and take him to Miss Peregrine. Emma thinks he's a wight. Miss Alma Peregrine then fills Jacob with the strange children of his grandfather's past, who are introduced to other strange children whose grandfather showed him pictures.
