Harlan's main desire is to leave the South and to get away from the prejudiced notions contained in it. His way of thinking is opposite what many in the Greenwood community accept as normal and is the cause for Grampa's embarrassment and past social status.

Harlan's views came about in his youth but expanded over time, especially after he served in World War II. Upon coming back to Mississippi, he finds that he can no longer be a part of such a prejudiced society and is very vocal about this. The relationship between Harlan and Grampa is very strained because of this and is further complicated when Harlan decides to move to Arizona, taking Hiram with him.
