Stubb is referred to as 3rd Mate in Chapter 48. Why?

I don't think Melville is referring to the rank of Stubb rather than identifying him as the third of the mates to be taken up in this particular passage. Starbuck and Flask have already been dealt with so Stubb would be the logical third.
