Ahab's malady is his desire to kill the whale. He realizes that Pip cannot be there, he cares to much for the bot to allow him to be a apart of the danger. He wants Pip with him, yet he will not allow it.
"The hour is coming when Ahab would not scare thee from him, yet would not have thee by him. There is that in thee, poor lad, which I feel too curing to my malady."
