What makes the whale-line so dangerous to the men in the boats?

The line is stored in the stern of the boat coiled tightly in a sort of tub. Whalers have to be very careful to coil their line with precision. If the whale line has a kink or tangle in it, it could easily kill someone as it is uncoiled.
