"In Marjane Satrapi's graphic memoir Persepolis 1: The Story of a Childhood, Satrapi begins the narrative of her memoir by introducing the veil: how it physically covers her body and symbolically veils her identity. Satrapi expresses that after she was veiled and separated from her friends as a child, she did not know what to think about the veil, as it divided her traditional sense of self from the modernism that was instilled in her by her parents. Satrapi explains in Persepolis 1 that she was born with religion and states, "At the age of six, I was already sure I was the last prophet,"
