How do you feel about Steve's actions in his first journal?

Steve's first journal entry evokes a certain amount of sympathy for his character. He's young, frightened, and trying to figure out how he ended up in prison. He learns that tears are silenced when shed in the darkness of night.... that the horrific beatings going on around him hide his own emotions. Thus, he uses this environment of fear and isolation to begin a chronicle for a movie of his experiences there.
