In the prologue, Steve Harmon introduces himself and his view of prison. In turn, his words build both tension and horror, using brief, violent descriptions of his prison experience and the way those experienced change people. The prologue works as an introductory poem that provides the reader with a sense of devastating reality, and also which, details Steve's method of coping with the prison environment. This prologue was written after the prosecutor began her case, and the title is significant because of the reference made by the prosecutor, referring to the killers as monsters.
