Why does O'Brien want Steve to testify?

O'Brien wants the jurors to see Steve by himself, in order to disconnect their view of Steve from the one they've already seen in King. King is beng the tough guy and likely going to be convicted. O'Brien believes that unless Steve takes the stand and alters their opinion of him he will lose.
