why does the court room scene include chatter about the length of the trial,softball, and the fourth of july

The details in the novel reflect what Steve is experiencing..... the actual trial, the distractions, the completely unrelated conversations going on around him. While Steve is sitting in the defendant's chair worried about his life..... other people are chatting about everyday occurrences.... their lives aren't hanging in the balance.... but Steve's is.
