The first emotion would obviously be respect for his skill as a physician along with his love for his uncle. Once Frank is revealed to be an abuser and perhaps a murderer, David obviously feels disdain for his uncle. and loses respect for his father when his father refuses to arrest his brother who has committed murder. When Frank kills himself at the end, the reader can believe that David has broken with his father Wesley when family loyalty cannot replace the crimes and sins that Frank has committed.
