How and why do David's feelings for Gloria change?

There are two possible answers for this question...

1) David cannot understand why his aunt tolerates her husband's adultery.

2) David had a crush on his aunt and realized he was envious of his uncle. He saw her as more than an aunt, she saw him as a substitute for the children she and Frank didn't have.
