He says that Claudio's slander killed his daughter. Certainly the whole rumour was "much ado about nothing" but Shakespeare adds a twist, sometimes "nothing" can have grave consequences.
Leanato says that Hero's death is the result of slanderous tongues.

Her death relates to the theme of "lies and deceit."
