Much Ado About Nothing
Every character a piece of literature serves a purpose. So what is the purpose of Benedick's characters in Much Ado About Nothing?
Benedick can be seen as a character foil for Beatrice. Although Beatrice drives the witty discourse between the two, Benedick is able to keep up his side of the clever banter. Benedick's manner underscores many of the themes of gender, sexism, and the institution of marriage. Despite lamenting about the opposite sex, he also brings a sense of universal morality when things are looking bad for Hero.
