Joseph questions Mary's fidelity to him. Claudio also questions Hero's fidelity to him. Both women are vulnerable and their future depends on what their respective men do. Mary is pregnant and Hero is not. Hero's alleged infidelity is based on rumor. Joseph's anger is tempered with the whole Son of God motif. Claudio's dilemma is patriarchal and sexual in nature.
