Shakespeare uses the imagery of animals throughout the text, especially when talking about love or women in love. Beactrice too is described as a bird, “a harpy”. So when shakespeare describes Hero as a “forward march-chick”, the word chick has connotations of youth and nature therefore perhaps he is trying to show the carnal nature of human beings, particularly when they are in love. In addition to this it could show how love can transform human beings or how human beings are easily trapped by forces larger than themselves, as Hero is about to be trapped in a marriage as if she were a little caged bird.
