T.S. Eliot was commissioned to write a play for Kent's annual Canterbury Festival.

Eliot chose to dramatize the death of Thomas Becket in his play Murder in the Cathedral was therefore both totally appropriate and yet somewhat unexpected.

Eliot wanted the theme to be around the Cathedral yet be entertaining. He mixed theology and tragedy to come up with a classic.
