this answer can be found in book 2 of My Antonia
The pioneers had a more challenging time of it. The packed grass and sod were difficult to deal with for them. Grasshoppers, locusts and other insects would destroy their crops. The Settlers had to depend on themselves with a little help from their born-Nebraskan neighbours. The pioneers were also very homesick away from their culture. The Nebraskans had more history on this land. They were more rooted to the environment and had established crops They also had family connections and more money.
