Why does Willa Cather have the Shimerdas living in a cave-like dugout dwelling?

Mr. Shimerda, Ántonia's father, used to be an educated musician back in his native Bohemia and is unhappy in his new country, where he knows nothing about farming. He basically is clueless about how to work a farm hence they are living in a cave-like dwelling.
