The setting is apartheid South Africa. Tensions are high no matter what one's race is. Thami feels constrained by the education system under apartheid, causing him to clash with his teacher Mr. M who has more traditional views about life in South Africa. The setting is a powder keg of pent-up anger on both sides of the race and political issues.
