What did Achillies do to become slightly immortal?

Achilles did nothing to make himself immortal. His mother, however, according to one myth, dipped her son into the River Styx in order to insure his immortality. Unfortunately, she could dip his heel because that's how she was holding him. Thus, his heel remained mortal.
