Patroclus was the son of Menoetius, a warrior, and a beloved comrade of Achilles. Many debate whether the two were involved sexually; I believe they were simply the closest of friends. When Achilles refused to fight, Patroclus donned his armor and fought at the head of the myrmidons, where he was killed by Hector. Achilles was so grief stricken and angry at Patroculus' death that he swore off sleep completely and vowed to kill hector in retaliation.
