How does Bigger feel about religion?

After seeing the burning cross of the KKK, Bigger throws his cross away and after a prison guard tries to explain to Bigger that the cross around his neck is his only hope and that it is "God's cross" and not the Klan's cross, Bigger again throws the cross away. Bigger has no refuge or salvation in religion.
