Why is Bigger so offended by the idea that Jan must have helped him with the murder and kidnapping?

Although his crime was heinous and unconscionable, it was still Bigger's crime. He wants to believe that he was able to follow through on one plan that was his. He wanted to own the one thing he is famous for.
