What effect does Wright create with his opening scene: a family (mother,daughter, two sons) in one room, especially with the women dressing?

The opening scene depicts complete and utter poverty. These four people live in a one room apartment, there's no privacy, and modesty isn't even a consideration. Wright's scene isn't pretty, but it is realistic.
