Where do the police and reporters take Bigger after the inquest? Why?

The police and reporters took Bigger to the hallway, so he could look at the mob scene out the window. They wanted him to confess his guilt in order to diffuse the situation and get things over with.

Bigger followed him out of the door; there were several policemen standing on guard in the hallway.
