Ruth has become very depressed and bitter. She is frailer and more docile than Kathy remembers. She has finally come to the realization that many donors “complete” (or die) after their second donations, although they are supposed to survive the second and third and die on the fourth. Ruth has become hopeless about the reality of her life.
