"The shadows around me roused themselves as if from a deep sleep and left silently in every direction."  The shadows refer to the people who had been silently listening to the horrible news that related to them being cleared from the ghetto.  This is a kind of metaphor.

"Our backyard looked like a market place."  This is a simile describing what the people are trying to take with them as they prepare for their transport.

"weariness had settled into our veins, our limbs, our brains, like molten lead" - a simile describing how the people felt preparing all night for their deportation.
