Elie has sworn to stand by his father and help him no matter what. In Chapter Eight, Eliezer knows that survival is based upon worrying about oneself, but he finds himself unable to ignore his father's anger. Note, Elie does not fail the text because he didn't help his father.... he fails because he resents having to.
