I'm not sure what you mean by "guard's condition". Can you re-state the question or give me chapter?

@Aslan I think it means the Germans in control. Such as, Contrast the soldiers' condition and behavior to the Jews' as they went through villages. I believe it's in chapter three.

The soldiers were blunt, cruel, faceless authoritarians. They humiliated, beat and tormented the Jews,

"Words spoken indifferently, without emotion."

The Jews were like scared sheep lost in terror.
