Elie's community is religious, close-knit, optimistic, naive, and trusting. Elie views the world in terms of his family, community and faith, as his greatest desire is to pursue his religious studies.
In Chapter Two, we see all of this change, as the innocence of Sighet's Jew is destroyed, and their optimism is ripped away. The are no longer complacent and trusting...... they are terrified.
