How do the changes in his relationship with his father affect the way Eliezer sees himself as an individual?

In the novel's early chapters, Elie is concerned with staying with his father... the two helped each other through. In Chapter Four, when Elie's father is beaten, he becomes angry with his father instead of showing him compassion. At the conclusion of the novel, Elie is relieved when his father dies, something he can never forgive himself for. Elie increasingly distances himself from his father and the strict Jewish identity the way his father viewed it. Elie no longer connects with the passionate believe in a benevolent God that he once held to be sacred.
