How does Elie Wiesel from Night describe the ghetto?

The Ghetto is a neighborhood cut off from the rest of the population. Although it was cramped and not their home, at least families were together and the place was relatively peaceful. Small businesses would even start up. The Jews believed the Ghetto was only temporary and they could return to their homes. . 

Elie originally thought the ghetto was not a terrible thing because they were entirely among themselves. They would no longer have to look at the hostile faces. People thought they would only remain there until the war was over and then they could go back to their homes.
