Elie faces many atrocities that shake his faith in God. Elie is crushed as he witnesses the fiery death pit of which countless babies lie having been used for target practise by the Nazi's. Elie even contemplates suicide before being ordered turn away from the ditch.Elie wonders how a benevolent God could let this happen. Elie questions how young Pipel could be hanged for a crime he had nothing to do with. Elie's faith slowly cracks amidst the Hell his God seems to have forsaken him in. Elie doesn't completely renounce God but his faith has been shaken by what he has experienced. Elie also questions humanity in general. Why is it that people do these things to each other? How can even Jews be cruel to their own brothers during this time. Elie never reconciles these issues which is one of the most tragic aspects of this story.
