Is there such thing as morality in "survival"mode?

There is definitely a survival mode. Elie, however, must "turn himself off" to emotionally endure the suffering. He knows the difference between right and wrong, but their meanings disappear in the haze of the Nazi death camp. When people are treated like animals, right and wrong becomes a distant memory from the past. It is no longer a reality, and at this time... survival is Elie's only concern.
