describes a moment in the Auschwitz Camp when a Gypsy struck his father with such force that his father was knocked to the ground. Nazis would sometimes put other prisoners in charge: a devide and conquer mentality. Elie is so worn out and scared that he can barely take care of himself. Even when his father is hit, Elie cannot muster the courage to help or intervene.
