Suspense builds early on when Eliezer hears to Moishe the Beadle tell of the horrors he witnessed and experienced at the hands of the Germans. THis suspense builds as Moishe's predictions begin to come true. All the Jews in Sighet are sent to a ghetto and later they are carted off by rail to Birkenau and finally to Auschwitz. There are various horrible things that take place at the camp. The climax is probably the death of Eli's father and news that the Russians are advancing to liberate them. Eli and the others do not know if the German soldiers are going to just kill them all before the Russians get there.
