Upon their arrival to Auschwitz, the last of the “beloved objects” that the Jews of Sighet leave behind are there “illusions.” What illusions is Wiesel referring to?

Elie is referring to illusions of safety..... the Jews didn't believe they were truly facing the danger that was rumored. When they arrived at Auschwitz, they knew the worst was true.
