Elie has seen too many atrocities. Elie's faith in God is being eroded. How God could let such things happen to his own children is beyond Eli's comprehension. Blind faith is not enough and he asks, “This day I ceased to plead....My eyes were open and I was alone-terribly alone in a world without God". Eli is grappling with his very being, he is questioning God.
