What does Elie Wiesel mean when he says “Who would allow such crimes to be committed? How could the world remain silent” in his Nobel Peace Prize speech.

Wiesel lived the atrocities of the Holocaust. These words question how people turned a blind eye to the horrors committed by the Nazi regime... the people who knew and did nothing. The silence of those who knew, allowed, and through their silence encouraged continued brutality, wickedness, and murder. Many people were aware of what was happening and did nothing.... many waited too long. Many believed the lies and propaganda, the supposed proof that the Holocaust wasn't happening..... others simply wanted to believe it, and thus, let it all slide by, refusing to get involved.
