Why did eliezer have conflicted feelings about his fathers illness

Eliezer loved his father but his father's illness made him a great burden. It was difficult enough for Eliezer to keep himself alive let alone worry about his father. Elie wonders if sometimes it would have been better for both of them if his father were not alive.
